Using AI Variables in Your Email Sequence

AI Mode lets Joy personalize each email using business and contact data, so every recipient gets a message that feels written just for them.

Enabling AI Mode

Open any step in your sequence and click AI Mode in the bottom toolbar. Toggle Enabled for this step to turn it on. When active, the toolbar will show AI Mode ON.

Inserting Variables

Type {{ anywhere in the email body to open the variable picker. You'll see two sections:

  • Standard variables — data pulled directly from your recipient list, like {{business_address}} or {{business_city}}. These support fallback text using the |FALLBACK: syntax (e.g. {{business_address|FALLBACK:your address on Google Maps}}).

  • AI Variables — dynamically generated by Joy at send time, like {{ai:first_name_cleaned}}, {{ai:business_name_cleaned}}, {{ai:good_fit_reason}}, etc.

Click any variable to insert it inline.

You can also just create a new one by typing anything like {{ai:anything_here}} directly in the email body.

Configuring an AI Variable

Click on any AI variable in the email body to open its settings panel on the right. Each variable has:

  • Name — a label for the variable (e.g. "Business Name (cleaned)")

  • Tell Joy what this slot should generate — a short instruction describing what Joy should write (e.g. "Business name cleaned up, sounds natural.")

  • If unavailable — what to do if Joy can't generate a value:

    • Use generic text

    • Use custom text (specify your fallback, e.g. "your store")

    • Skip this block

To delete a variable, click Remove variable at the bottom of the panel.

Previewing AI Emails While Writing

While editing your email copy, you can preview how Joy will personalize it for a real recipient. Click the eye icon in the bottom toolbar to open the preview. This pulls in actual data from your recipient list and shows you a fully rendered version of the email, with all AI variables filled in. Use this to spot any variables that need better instructions or fallback text before you launch.

Previewing After Activation

Once you activate your campaign, Overjoy automatically pre-generates the next 50 emails. To review them, go to the Scheduled/Sent tab at the top of the campaign page. From there you can see each upcoming email exactly as it will be sent, including all personalized content Joy has already written.

Tips

  • AI variables are highlighted in purple; standard variables appear in green.

  • You can use AI variables across multiple steps. Configure each step's AI Mode independently.

  • Use the fallback options to make sure every email reads naturally even when data is missing.
